Auto accidents happen every day often times resulting in damaging experiences. It may be difficult to prevent imperceptible motor vehicle accidents, but for safety measures and legal purposes it is important to know there are helpful before and after accident tips. The tips listed below are a reflection of what State Farm recommends drivers to do.

What to do before an auto accident:

  1. Be prepared by always having a copy of your insurance card and registration in your vehicle.
  2. Be prepared to record or photograph post-accident damages.

What to do after an auto accident:

  1. Quickly inspect your surroundings for anyone injured and call emergency services if anyone is hurt.
  2. Remember to remove yourself away from the accident and evacuate the vehicle if it is safe to do so.
  3. Make sure to always call the police after an accident so they can file a report. You will be asked to file the report on your own if the accident was minor.
  4. Don’t forget to turn on your hazard lights and set up any roadside emergency items you may have.
  5. Contact Roadside Assistance.
  6. With an app or notebook, record all details and make sure the other party involved in the accident shares their information as well.
  7. It is critical to take photographs or video recordings of any property damages, injuries, scenery, and anything that is relevant to the incident.
  8. Ask for a copy of the police report for your records and for the claims process.

What not to do after an auto accident:

  • Do not assign blame.
  • Only sign forms or documents from the police if you are asked to.
  • Do not leave the scene.

It is important to remain alert while driving. Our driving habits influence our safety, the safety of our passengers, and the safety of anyone who is on the road.
